This weekend (August 20th and 21st) The New Blue Parrot Productions theater will be performing Thoroughly Modern Millie and if you aren’t familiar with the show it’s a fun one. It is full of fun numbers and lots of dancing. The following is taken from their website about the show…

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston. Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz – a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.

The New Blue Parrot Productions is the parent to The New Blue Parrot Theatre and The Blue Parrot Children’s Theatre. The have been entertaining us in Clark County since 1983! They are a non-profit 501(c)(3) performing arts company dedicated to bringing us professional quality theater.

Thoroughly Modern Millie will be performing this Friday and Saturday at the Washburn Performing Arts Center in Washougal, WA. Roots Restaurant & Bar, in the Riverstone Marketplace in Camas, offers an innovative choice in upscale dining. Overflowing with Pacific Northwest warmth, the restaurant offers an open view to the bustling chefs counter, a warm and welcoming dining room, a fully stocked bar, professional and friendly service, and most importantly, cuisine that exemplifies the Northwest’s best.

The above statement taken from Roots Restaurant website sums them up beautifully. Roots is a wonderful dining experience from start to finish. I’ve enjoyed dinners, lunches and happy hour times in this excellent establishment. The food is always fresh and has always been prepared just right. Today my wife and I actually were able to enjoy a lunch together and I ordered the Prime Rib French Dip. I can honestly say this was the most tender prime rib I’ve ever experienced. It literally melted in my mouth. The au jus was flavored just right and complimented my sandwich perfectly and the salad was excellent. My wife had the daily sandwich special which was a BBQ Chicken Sandwich with cole slaw. It also was exceptional. Unfortunately we did not save enough room for dessert because their desserts are also wonderful.

Another cool thing that is offered occasionally at Roots is their classes. Chef and owner Brad Root holds a “cooking on the patio” class and they also offer a “cocktails in the lounge” class for those desiring to learn a little mixology. These sound like great events and this is where you’ll find Roots class schedule.

I feel awful that I’ve neglected the Camas Farmer’s Market until now. Today’s the day! I’d love to remind you all that on Wednesday afternoons and evenings you can enjoy a great farmers market right in Downtown Camas, WA.

Camas Farmer’s Market is a wonderful place to get local produce, flowers and take in all that this area has to offer. As you can see from their site it is so much more…

Along with fruits and vegetables from small family farms you will find artisan bakers, foraged berries and mushrooms, pastured meats, cheeses, herbs and starts to complete your market experience. Each week, linger and listen to live music while you enjoy delicious foods freshly prepared from real foods.

It’s finally hot outside. We’ve finally reached the right temperatures to hit an outdoor swimming area. Today I’d like to introduce you all to the Camas Swimming Pool located in Crown Park. This community pool has been serving Camas, WA and the east side of Clark County since 1954! That’s a lot of generations of swimmers!

You’ll find the Camas Pool open from 1PM until 5PM Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1PM until 4:30PM. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5PM until 7:30PM are Family Swim nights. All children 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult during family time.

You can buy single swim passes for each visit or buy Punch Passes in blocks of 10 or 25. They have three different pools. The main pool ranges from 3.5 feet to 10 feet deep. They have a junior pool that ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 feet deep and a baby pool that ranges from 2 inches to 18 inches deep. Something for everyone! Camas Pool also offers a full series of swimming lessons for those wanting to learn to swim.

Day 154 of 365…

As I’ve mentioned recently July and August are the months of outdoor activities in Clark County. This weekend is no exception.

I mentioned yesterday about the Washougal Motocross Championship that takes place Wednesday though Saturday. You’ll also find this Friday and Saturday (the 23rd & 24th) is Camas Days. This annual event always takes place on the fourth weekend of July.

During Camas Days you will see arts and craft vendors, tons of food, concerts in the park, two parades (kids parade on Friday & main parade on Saturday), the ducky derby, a softball tournament and the famous bathtub races. The races take place in front of City Hall. There is also a wine and microbrew area for those who enjoy this social activity. I almost forgot, there’s also live music both days.

The main activities take place between 10am and 8pm Friday and Saturday. The Wine and Microbrew Street is from 5pm to 11pm both days.

Camas Days takes place all over downtown Camas and the theme this year is “Wizards and Wishes”. I know I’m looking forward to stopping in and hanging out a while. I’d encourage you to stop by as well.

Day 153 of 365…

This Wednesday the dust will get kicked up for the annual AMA Motocross Championship event at the Washougal MX Park. The amateur events will be on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd with the National Pro event happening on Saturday the 24th. Yes, I said Pro. This is a great opportunity to see some of your favorite pro motocross riders up close and personal. Can you believe this has been happening since 1971. That’s almost as old as I am.

If you’d like to attend all four days of events it is $55 per person or you can attend the Pro event on Saturday for $35. Kids 6 and under are free. Here is where to buy tickets for the Washougal Motocross Championship

Day 141 of 365…

As I mentioned yesterday, this is the season of fairs and festivals. Today I’d like to share another great FREE event happening this weekend. Saturday and Sunday is the 2010 Art & Wine Festival at English Estate Winery. This annual event brings in over 30 local artists showcasing their jewelry, pottery, metal art, paintings, flowers, sculpture, clothing, accessories and a lot more. You can simply enjoy seeing all they have to offer or maybe buy something cool to take home or give as a gift.

On site there will also be food, wine and live music. Saturday this event happens between noon and 8pm and Sunday it’s from noon to 6pm. This means you could attend the 4th Plain International Food Festival sometime during the day on Saturday and head to the Art & Wine Festival later that day/evening or anytime on Sunday. How cool is that? Two great events supporting local artists, musicians, restaurants/winery and our community.

Sometimes at the end of a very long day a little treat like a tasty ice cream cone hits the spot. What do you do if you find yourself East of Vancouver in Washougal, WA at the end of that day craving that ice cream? You go to Papa’s Ice Cream of course! What a cool place with an awesome vibe. Know what else is cool? They’re open until 9PM which worked out perfect for my evening craving.

They feature 32 flavors of yummy Umpqua Ice Cream plus all sorts of candies, bagels, zippies, sandwiches and coffees and teas too! You’ll also find a plasma on the wall and a Wii to play as well. They don’t want you to just come in and grab a cone and go. Papa wants you to feel at home and stay a bit.

Did I mention the waffle cone comes standard?!?! Yummm!

Day 129 of 365…

Recently I shared about Lacamas Lake and how beautiful it is. I also shared there are all sorts of wonderful things around it to do like the trail around Round Lake on the east side of Lacamas. Today I’m going to share about another wonderful trail that starts on the far west side of Lacamas Lake and meanders along Lacamas Creek and Lacamas Lake on the south side.

This trail is the Lacamas Heritage Trail. It is a 3.5 mile gravel trail that is beautiful. Whether you want to walk, run or bike you’ll thoroughly enjoy this. Here’s a great quote from their website…

It provides superb opportunities to view birds, rock formations and waterfalls, along with offering picnicking stops, extensive waterfront access and a children’s play center.

The trailhead is located on Goodwin Road and Lacamas Creek. You really should come enjoy this gorgeous trail.

Day 113 of 365…

Today I had the privilege of meeting with Brandie Kajino of the SOHO Solutionist to do an interview for her podcast. We had a wonderful visit and I think the episode turned out great. Thanks Brandie!

She suggested we meet at a quaint little shop in downtown Camas called Caffe Piccolo Paradiso and what a treat that was. If Camas and eastern Vancouver had a Cheers this would be it! This is THE place where everybody knows your name. While there I was introduced to more than a half dozen regulars including local superstar Krista Colvin. Krista and I have been online friends for a couple years but never managed to cross our paths in a face to face setting. Today that was finally remedied. It was extra special seeing Krista since she’s currently putting on her big girl panties + kicking breast cancer in the a$$! As a cancer survivor myself this really touches home. I’m rooting for you Krista!

Back to Caffe Piccolo Paradiso… This place rocks! Wonderful ambiance, great coffee (so the gals said), awesome Chai, Pam the owner is super nice, free WiFi, cool decor… What more do you need. The pastries and food looked awesome as well. Next time I’ll get something to eat. If you’re in the area I’d recommend you stop in and say hi to the “regulars”. You never know, you might just make a new friend. I know I made several.
