You read it right. Whiffies Fried Pies.

What’s a Whiffies Fried Pie? I’m glad you asked. They are basically a tasty pastry dough that is filled with a filling, folded up and then fried. Whiffies makes two varieties of pies.

Sweet

Each day is slightly different. So far, I’ve seen apple, peach, cherry, blueberry and strawberry on the menu. I’ve personally had the blueberry and strawberry. Both were wonderful! Light, flaky crust with a sweet warm filling.

Savory

Again, there are different pies making the rotation in this category too. So far I’ve seen brisket, bbq tofu, chicken pot pie and pulled pork. I’ve not yet tried any of the savory pies. I plan to remedy that problem this Saturday night.

I’ll be going to Whiffies Fried Pies this Saturday night, 6-6-09 at 9PM for a @Whiffies pie eating contest. No, I won’t be competing. I will be enjoying a savory pie and a sweet pie though. I’ll also be enjoying a fresh homemade lemonade. The lemonade is excellent.

I happened to stumble upon Raven “@ravenme” Zachary last Friday night as he beat the old record of 5 pies. This event set into motion a much larger event that has even turned into a bit of a fundraiser as well as full blown “eating contest”. As you might imagine, I had my Flip video with me and managed to capture the end of Ravens accomplishment. You might enjoy this.

Whether in Vancouver or Portland I’d love to see you come out and try a pie (or two) and watch as a new record is set. I’m bringing my whole family for the festivities. I’ll be rooting for Vancouver’s very own Aaron “@ahockley” Hockley. Who will you be rooting for?

Whiffies Fried Pies is located on the NE corner of SE 12th & Hawthorne. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 8PM to 3AM (ya gotta love Portland).
